Colin was violently ill for the first time ever tonight and I am still recovering from it myself. He had been acting strangely all afternoon, turning down his milk, waking up screaming after a 20 minute nap and then turning around and napping until 5pm. He was not feverish, but not himself at all. At dinner, he just sat in his high chair and looked at his food. He would not even touch it, much less eat a bite. I was thinking about how strange that was when all of a sudden the poor little guy just started throwing up. It is mind blowing how very much can come out of such a little person. I pulled him out of the chair and ran him into the bathtub where I stripped him down and started cleaning him up. Jer is out of town this week for work, so I had to take care of it on my own. He was rather pale, but seemed to perk up a bit and even smile after I got him clean. I put his pj's on and then had to lock him in the back of the house so that I could clean up the chair and floor. Once I got the mess taken care of, I took Colin back into the living room and we sat on the couch reading books and relaxing. I waited almost two hours and he has not thrown up again, so I went ahead and put him to bed. I can tell this will be a night that I sleep with one eye open hoping that he does not get sick again. It breaks my heart to see him sick like that! I hope he just ate something that did not agree with him, but we shall see.
I immediately thought of my mother tonight as I was covered in vomit. :-) I remember being sick when I was little and my mama being right there to hold my hair and change my sheets and wipe my face with a cool cloth. She always made everything better and never gave a second thought to how gross things were. I vaguely recall one night where she must have emptied a trash can several times before I moved to just lay on the bathroom floor. She sat there with me all night bathing my face in cool water. Tonight I feel like I got my first chance to take after her and give back what she gave to me. I was reminded that nothing (even really icky things) fazes a mama taking care of her baby when he needs her.

Sleeping In!
Today was a rather interesting day for Colin. He woke up at 8:15 am. It was insane. I was so worried that I went in twice to make sure he was breathing! He had his shots at the doctor yesterday and I knew he was extremely worn out from the traumatic experience, although that is really worn out! It worked out well because after such a late sleep, he only needed one afternoon nap which he took at noon. He went to bed this evening at his normal time and was not too fussy at all. It would be awesome if he would start to reset his clock and wake up a bit later in the mornings to help get rid of the early nap, but who knows. He has been waking up later for about the past week, making it at least until 7:00am every day. Considering the fact that Colin has woken up at 6:00am like clockwork since May, that is quite a change. I can sense that he is going through a lot of internal changes right now, so I am just watching and waiting!
Tonight as Colin was having his bath, I started pointing out all his bath toys by name to him. I was asking him for his dog and he would hand it to me and so on. So at one point I said, "Colin, can you say DUCK? DUCK?" and Colin looks at me and says, "DU - ck" just like that. I had to laugh to myself...I have talked to so many of my friends in the last 24 hours about Colin talking and everyone has said that he would do it when he was ready. You are all right...Colin may not have 5 words right now, but he is obviously just fine and will talk when he is good and ready. My friend April said it best...being a first time mom is SO TIRING sometimes!!!!! Seriously, does the constant worry ever get easier?!? I doubt it. :-)

Happy 15 Months, Colin!
Today is Colin's 15 month birthday! We just got home from his well baby visit and the newest stats are:
Weight: 25 lbs, 5 oz (50 - 75 percentile)
Length: 32.5 inches (75 - 90 percentile)
The stats are in the exact same percentiles as the last visit, which is great. Dr. Fricker was very happy to see Colin and was impressed as usual at how happy he is and how very tall he is. He is looking so much more like a little boy than a baby these days. Most everything was good news and standard procedure. Colin still drinks milk from a bottle at naps and bedtime, which I am going to begin weaning him from now. He has molars coming in and one has already hit the surface, which I did not notice until the pedi opened Colin's mouth and showed me. It looks really painful! I also brought up my concern about Colin not talking much yet. Dr. Fricker said they do like to see 4 to 5 words at 15 months and Colin is just not a talker yet. The pedi did not seem worried, but did tell me that the state will send a speech therapist out to the house to evaluate him if we would like. He pointed out that speech tends to happen in large jumps, like going from no words to 5 words in a day or two and that at this point he is not too far behind. It really can't hurt to get him evaluated and if he does need help talking, I certainly want to start sooner than later! We take Colin back for his second flu shot in 4 weeks, so at that point we will make the appointment with the therapist if he is still not talking then. He babbles a lot and the doctor was glad to see that he clearly understands me, just does not talk back. But again, I don't want to put off helping him if he needs it!! We shall see!
